Facebook Pages & Top News

EdgeRankHow do I get onto someone’s Top News feed?

Every time you log into Facebook (according to statistics that would everyday) you land on your homepage and start reading your Top News feed, the default view. Then, switch over to your Most Recent feed to catch anything else you may have missed. But the real question for any internet marketer on Facebook is ‘How do I get onto someone’s Top News feed?’

I’ll share the secret with you

20 million people visit Walmart on a daily basis, whereas 250 million people visit Facebook each day. There is no other online marketing channel that can deliver this kind of reach. So how to do you get in front of those 250 million people? I’ll share the secret with you. Ok, it’s not really a secret but it’s a question that many people ask but just don’t know the right answer.

The EdgeRank formula

That neat graphic you see in the upper right of this post is the EdgeRank formula that Facebook uses to determine what content shows up in a user’s top news feed. So what do those letters mean? Well, that is why you are reading this article and I am going to tell you.

EdgeRank looks at the affinity score (how often the user interacts with the FB Page), its weight (how many comments and Likes a post has), and the time decay (how recent that update was posted).

How to nail the EdgeRank formula

Be sure your posts on Facebook follow the above formula or else you may be wasting your time, as updates will not be seen by your fans. Before you post the content, ask yourself if you are being engaging? Are you asking a question to not only spark interest but entice your readers to interact with your post, leave comments, and click its Like link.  Launching a new product? Request your fans’ opinion within a Facebook post.

Final Thought

The above information is extremely valuable and I strongly encourage every internet marketer to take advantage of it. A ‘call to action’ is the nail in the coffin to successful email marketing, copy writing, and other forms of internet marketing. Understanding and utilizing the EdgeRank formula will drastically increase your exposure.

Do you have any experience using the EdgeRank formula or any of Facebook strategies to effectively increase your exposure?

Great post!! Google’s recent algorithm changes reflect a similar process. The goal is to give the visitor the best user experience, so providing the popular and relevant results is one way of doing so. Just like you mentioned above, providing engaging and interesting content is perhaps the best way to attract more community support, get more clicks, and in return maintain a higher position on the news feed.

Hey Greg! Thanks for the insight on Google’s algorithm. As time continues to progress, so does our understanding of the internet and how people interact with it and use it. We are looking for the most engaging and interesting content, so the best way to reach us is to deliver that directly to us in the simplest form possible. Then, those who can do that will earn the rewards.

You did it again. Nice, you know the interesting thing about what you are saying is something that I felt inclined to do. I am going to expound on your article and get into the logic (my logic) behind the madness.

What Clifton is saying as well folks is that Facebook didn’t put all the tools inside of the framework for nothing. There is a purpose for everything these boys at facebook are doing.

I personally click everything because my theory is ‘If they put it there, I’m am going to find it and use it.

Same applies here actually. You Digg? tweet, tweet. Look to the left one of Clifton’s principals that he shared.. A like button to the left.

Keep it up man. you are doing it right. Valuable, valuable information. He is not kidding folks. With the knowledge he just shared is Worth a lot and watch; it will change the way you look at facebook ever again.

Now off to make a video.

    CIAO!

Thanks again Wayne. I always appreciate your feedback and input. In order to maximize something, you must first figure out how it works. Well, this article tells you both. Now it’s the marketers job to take advantage of the information. :)

Not many people do know about this or have just figured it out on their own. Landing on the Top News feed isn’t just random. It’s a strategy. :)

I had a feeling there was a weird algorithm to fb feeds. I started noticing that not all of my posts were being seen. Thanks for clearing this up Clifton. Look forward to more great info.

Thanks Patrick. Glad you’ve stop by my blog and hope that you visit often. Maximizing the EdgeRank Formula is rather simple as long as you can make the post engaging. Give it a try!

Great question Enomfon. First, creating a valuable and well maintained Facebook Page is the first step. Then engaging with the users who have Liked your Page is the second. Spamming them with messages everyday is a great way to LOSE users. Be strategic in your posts by asking questions and offering free worthy advice to spark interest and comments. That will help to build your brand and marketing efforts.

    Aloha Clifton,

Thank you so much for the great information and incredible stats. May I ask, what is the best way to have people engage with me on my Fan page?

Great question Kellie and thanks for the feedback.

The best proven way to get people to engage with you on your Facebook Fan page is to engage with them through your posts.

Have you noticed the new Question feature on Facebook where you post your status? Go to your Page and ask a question. Something that will actually inquire your fans to participate. Or stick to the tried and true way of posting valuable content and asking for them to leave feedback within the comment area. You might be amazed at the increase of interaction you will receive just by simply asking for it. :)

When you see results, come back and let me know! Thanks

    Hi Clifton,

well written, and all true. But what do you think about the problem of being seen at all? Even a page with many fans/likes might be invisible on both Top News and Recent News for most users – until a critical mass interacts.

I am not sure if Facebook intended this, but I think apart from posting like you said (with a focus on driving engagement) there might also be a need to run mini Facebook ad campaigns in the desired target group. Even if it’s only for a day.

    • Posted by Clifton Hatfield on November 01, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Great observation Mario and great question. Although as internet marketers we tend to think that it is a playground for targeting our audience, we have to remember that Facebook is a social platform designed to establish connections between people and their interests. The same EdgeRank algorithm still applies and that a post must still meet each part of the formula in order to make it onto the Top News feed. If you are having trouble having people visiting your Page, try using the Updates function to increase this part of the formula.

Facebook Advertising is the new Google and it would be a wise choice to run ad campaigns to nail your target.
