Full WordPress Backup : Better Safe Than Sorry

Backup IconHow to perform a full backup of your server even if you have a WordPress Blog.

Imagine losing everything you have worked SO hard to build….it happens all of the time. So I suggest to be better safe than sorry. I have put together a quick video on how to perform a full backup of your server that includes ALL of your files, subdomains, emails, stats, databases, and basically everything on your hosting account. A WordPress plugin will not backup everything because it will only backup your WordPress files and it’s database.

Watch my video below to learn the simple steps of manually backing up your hosting account in just a couple of minutes.

    Hi Clifton!

Wow….I think there are a lot of things that I should be doing that I am not doing….like THIS! I am going to check this out and try to do it because Mentor Mama agrees that I am better safe than sorry! I never even thought about backing up, other than I back up my posts into a word doc. file. Bring on more of this!

    Thanks!

Nancy! Shame on you! You need to be performing regular updates as often as possible. Hardware fails. Accidents happen. You never know…something is better than nothing but a full backup of EVERYTHING is your best bet during that time of disaster! Thanks :)

Thanks Mary Lou! I am really glad you received value from this post and video on backing up. Did you have any trouble? Were you able to save the compressed back up on your computer’s hard drive? Let me know if you have any problems and hopefully I can guide you along. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing your expertise, Clifton. I found your website via Roshanda as we are in a Ultimate Blog Challenge group. Say, a few days ago, someone posted info on backing up WordPress sites and recommended WPTWIN which backs up everything..categories, permalinks, posts, etc. I commented back saying I thought that our hosting company had me covered with the backup. He said no. Perhaps I misunderstood. I am hosted on Blue Host and they do backups every day. Your thoughts? Thanks Clifton.

    • Posted by Clifton Hatfield on July 26, 2011 at 12:38 am

Hey Julie, thanks for the comment! Great questions. WPTWIN doesn’t backup everything. In fact, it would be impossible for a WordPress backup plugin to backup everything. It’s true that these plugins, assuming that are up-to-date and working, will back up your WordPress database. But what about all of your files, plugins, themes, email address, sub0domains, addon domains, etc.? It can’t backup up your entire hosting account. So although you won’t have to start from scratch because you will still have your database, you will lose everything else. You will have to ask BlueHost about their backup policy but for me, I don’t feel confident unless I have at least two backups in my possession. My blog is too important for me to rely on a WordPress Plugin that I am not sure it properly works or to rely on the hosting company either. What if their systems go down? Using the cPanel to backup your entire hosting account only takes a couple minutes (depending on the filesize). So that time I well worth it to me.

      Hope that helps! :)
